Think about your childhood.

Now, think about your middle and high school experiences.

Now, think about college.

In addition to the myriad of other thoughts that probably flooded your mind about that time in your life, was there also a person or several people who came across your mind who were influential in your life during this time? Maybe it was your parents, grandparents, or other family members; maybe it was a teacher, a guidance counselor or a peer. No matter who it was, the fact that you still remember them and attribute part of your success to them speaks volumes.

Now, to whom can say you’ve been that person in someone’s life? If that question intimidated you and you don’t feel adequate to be a mentor to someone else, be encouraged that YOU are more than equipped to be a positive influence in someone else’s life.

As we head into the summer, this is one of the best times of the year to step into mentorship because kids and college students are on summer break. This can be a pivotal time in their life where they tend to have ample free time and need a little more structure or guidance to help them navigate the next school year or season. Similarly, there may be a colleague or peer at church that you could pour into.

Don’t shy away from being a blessing. Mentorship is in the little moments. Someone could use your smile, your encouragement, the lessons you learned from walking through a chapter someone else is about to enter. Commit to being open to someone who needs you and watch who God brings into your life.
